What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapists are qualified health professionals that aim to help 'restore movement and function when someone is affected by illness, injury or disability'.
As a science based profession, physiotherapists take into account the whole body when treating a particular condition, including an individual's lifestyle and general health and well-being.
This approach helps the physio to understand why an individual is experiencing pain or has a particular injury, allowing them to educate the patient and provide an effective treatment plan that will help prevent the condition from re occurring in the future.
For example, many individuals experience back pain as a result of poor posture when working at a computer all day. In this instance the physiotherapist will not only provide necessary treatment to relieve the pain, but will also educate the patient to sit with correct posture and take regular breaks from their desk in order to manoeuvre their back and rest of the body. This lifestyle advice protects the patient's back and helps to prevent the condition from reoccurring in the future.
Physiotherapy provides individuals with the opportunity to effectively relieve and manage pain caused by an injury or illness; together with education and lifestyle advice to manage a long term condition, or to prevent the injury from re occurring in the future.
